The Barony of the South Downs is proud to present
Red Tower 38
and Baronial Investiture
September 17-19, 2010
Hard Labor Creek State Park (Camp Rutledge)
The Red Tower Tournament is one of the oldest traditions of the Kingdom of Meridies. Mighty warriors will vie for the right to be named the guardian of the Tower, in a display of prowess not to be missed. Just as the Tower has been defended by a long line of the Kingdom's fiercest fighters, so has the Barony of the South Downs been led by a long line of noble Barons and Baronesses throughout its many years. The time has come once more for the Coronet to be passed on to new hands, and the Barony invites all to bear witness.
Come honor the service of Their Excellencies, Cathal mac Edan na faeled and Caroljane Ravenridge, and witness the investiture of Hajji Turahan Karamani al-Arsalan and Jadi Fatima al-Ishfahani al-Samarkandiyya as the next Baron and Baroness of the South Downs.
Directions:
Located 2 miles north of Rutledge. Take I-20 exit #105 into Rutledge and proceed 3 miles on Fairplay Road.

Fighting: Heavy Combat
Sebastian Cornelius is marshal of the field. For all tournaments, any legal weapon style is permitted.
The Red Tower Tourney
Starts 30 minutes after the end of Morning Court.
All the attending fighters will be broken up into four list fields. Within these list fields, the fighters will participate in a round robin open weapon style tournament where they will use tokens to track their winnings. There will be two winners per list, one will be awarded by a show of arms (person with the most tokens) in a case where tokens are even, a challenge of arms will decide the final winner. An additional winner will be declared by the ladies of the field, they will be chosen by their honour and valor on the field as well as their ability to win the ladies heart. Two fighters will be named the champions of the tower. However, all great Fellowships need a Captain. So the Final 8 fighters will fight a best out of 3 standard tournament, The winner being named the Captain of the Tower Champions.
Novice Tournament
Starts after lunch.
This will be a standard tournament, single elimination. The two finalists will fight a best of 3. No previous winners of any tournaments, please.
Baron's Prize Tournament
Starts immediately after the Novice Tournament, time permitting. This will be a standard single elimination (single bout, best two out of three), any weapons style.
Queen's Champion Tournament
Details TBD.
Fighting: Rapier Combat and Cut & Thrust
Yves de Fortanier is the marshal in charge (except for C&T).
Cut & Thrust Demonstrations
Could begin before Morning Court with a bit more afterward depending on the preferences of the participants and their marshal. Details TBD.
Authorizations
Any requested authorizations can take place around the other activities.
Sable & Azure List
Begins after Morning Court. Like last year, Yves will sort the contestants into two sides based on rank and geography. Similar to a round robin, you'll fence against each person on the other side once. (Last year, there were two sides of seven fencers each.) A double-kill results in a loss for both fencers. Both fencers will report the result to the list herald. The top fencers will qualify for a single-elimination final round.
Passage of Arms
Begins after lunch. The highest ranking fencers will be invited to serve as the Defenders. The rest will be allowed to challenge them. If time permits, additional challenges/contests can be done after each of the Challengers has had their turn.
Tips for both Defenders and Challengers
- Look sharp and speak well (or hire a herald to present you)
- If you're "dead", fall down
- Note which Challengers do well and speak on this at the closing
Tips for Challengers
- Show off what you do well
- Request that the Defender use a certain weapon style
- Use more than one weapon style in your challenge
- Choose the victory conditions: number of touches (such as best of seven, or first fencer to three), lethal/nonlethal targets only, and the like
Challenge suggestions
- Face one Defender, fence to the best of seven touches (wound or kill)
- Face one Defender, fence to first kill with several style combinations
- Face two Defenders, first to three kills each
- LEAD one to three of your fellow Challengers in a melee against two or three Defenders
Merchants / Vendors
The steward is Lady Madelena da Firenze. Send email to Madelena. Merchants will be assigned space at the fighting field: no exceptions. Register early for a prime location. There are no merchanting fees, but you'll have to bring your own equipment and furniture. There will be no access to electrical power and, for the sake of ambience, generators are not permitted. Sleeping overnight on or at the field is not permitted. Pick up your welcome packet when you check in at registration.
Children's Activities
Lady Lucia da Padua is in charge. Details TBD. If your child participates, we ask that one of the child's parents donate one hour of their day to help run and monitor the Children's Activities. There will be a sign-up sheet at registration for this. Thank you.
